WASHINGTON (November 2, 2016) – The Silicones Environmental, Health, and Safety Center (SEHSC) of the American Chemistry Council today announced the launch of a new website, SiliconesBenefits.com, which highlights the variety of ways that silicones’ unique properties and versatility positively impact Americans’ lives. SEHSC is the North American regional silicone industry association of the Global Silicones Council.
“Silicones play a vital role in many sectors of the American economy. This new website shows consumers and policymakers the wide array of benefits these specialized materials provide,” said Karluss Thomas, senior director, ACC's Silicones Environmental, Health, and Safety Center.

Few materials can be used in such diverse applications. The website explains how silicones help advance technologies and innovations, including LED lights, electric vehicles, medical prosthetics, and renewable energy sources. The silicones benefits website highlights the role silicones play in transportation, health care, electronics, consumer products, construction, and energy.
The website also emphasizes the industry’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship. One of the industry’s many initiatives is a robust environmental monitoring program to examine levels of a key silicone material, the siloxane D4, in multiple locations throughout the United States. This program was initiated in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is funded by major silicone producers. The program will provide the agency with real-world monitoring data to facilitate EPA’s environmental risk assessment for D4, which will prevent the need to use computer models.
“Silicones are among the most-studied materials in consumer products and industrial applications. This program is just one of the industry’s many investments to ensure silicones are used in ways that are safe for humans, animals, and the environment,” said Thomas.
“SiliconesBenefits.com is a valuable new tool for those seeking information on the practical uses of silicones or information on the health and safety of silicone materials,” concluded Thomas.
